Civil War Biographies

George W. Story


George Washington Story was born November 20, 1818 in Fleming County, KY. He moved to Sullivan Co IN in 1832 and married Susan Dixon in 1847.
He was drafted into the Indiana Infantry on October 6, 1862. George Story was sent to Camp Carrington in Indianapolis, IN for basic training, where he became part of the 26th Indiana Infantry, Company B. After spending most of spring, 1863 in the hospital with an illness, he arrived at Vicksburg MS on July 5, 1863. One day after the city was taken by Union forces.
He was at the battle of Yazoo City, MS and Port Hudson, LA. He was hospitalized at Camp Carrolton, LA, where he received a medical discharge in January, 1864.
George W. Story lived to be 82 years old and died on February 3, 1900.
