Civil War Biographies

John W. Story


John W. Story, a pioneer citizen of Milam county Texas was born 27 May 1820, possibly in Giles county Tennessee. The exact county is unknown as are the names of his parents. John and his family migrated to Milam county from Lauderdale co., Alabama arriving in 1855. Shortly after his arrival he bought 225 acres of land from the Jose Leal Grant near the town of Cameron and known as the "Island."

When war broke out John heeded the call of his country and enlisted in Company I " Milam Guards," 27th Brigade, Texas State Troops and was elected Captain on 29 March 1862. On May 17, 1862 John and his son Richard were mustered in as privates in 2nd Company B, 35th Texas Cavalry. He was sick most of the time that he served with this unit and was in fact hospitalized at C.S.A. General Hospital in Shreveport, LA in Sept. 1864. He rejoined at Camp Ford, Tyler, TX in November of the same year. John's illness contracted during the war was also the cause of his death (diarrhea) and he died 10 Feb 1870 in Milam county and is buried in the Rice cemetery.

On 23 September 1840 he married Elizabeth Smith in Lauderdale co., Alabama. Elizabeth was born 12 May 1821 in TN is believed to have died on 23 Oct 1880. She too is buried in the Rice cemetery. John and Elizabeth were the parents of the following known children:

1. Richard D. Story, born about 1843 in Lauderdale co, AL and died 19 March 1912. He married first to Jerleen Mann on 20 Aug 1868 in Bell co, TX and second to Catherine Shields on 25 Sep 1887 in Milam co, TX. Richard, who served along side with his father, received a pension for his service to the Confederacy by the state of Texas.

2. Sarah Story, born about 1845 in Lauderdale co, AL. No further information is known.

3. Martha E. Story, born about 1848 in Lauderdale co, AL. No further information is known.

4. James A. Story, born 24 Oct 1852 in Lauderdale co, AL. James died 4 Jan 1929 and is buried in the Marlow cemetery near Cameron. James was married to Larah Ingram in Milam county on 29 July 1877.

5. John W. Story, JR. was born 19 Oct 1855 in Milam co, TX. John died 23 May 1934 and is buried in the Marlow cemetery near Cameron. John married first to Callie Storey in Milam county on 14 July 1877 and second to Josephine (Ingram) Winston about 1891 in Milam county.

6. George W. Story, born in 1861 in Milam co., TX. He died in 1924 and is buried in Leon co., TX. George married to Annie Sewell on 6 Aug 1882 in Milam county.
