Falcons

3/3 During the 1662-4 Visitation of Nottinghamshire by William Dugdale, Norroy, JOHN STORY of Kneeton was summoned to justify his title of "Gentleman", but he disclaimed that title at Nottingham assizes, which meant he avoided certain duties which gentlemen had to perform, and so he was not entitled to a coat of arms. However his son must have regretted that because on 29 Dec. 1676 Arms were granted by Norroy King of Arms to JOHN STORY (1623-1680) of Kneveton (son of the above John) : Per tess indented argent and sable three falcons counterchanged. Crest: On a wreath of laurel a black faicon1 all proper. Motto: "Verus honor honestas". Fletcher says Cornish Choughs, not Falcons.

3/4 ROBERT STORY (c.1732-1822) physician to The Nabob of Arcot in India. Returning home he built Arcot Hall in NBL He might be connected with the GEORGE STOREY of Newcastle-upon-Tyne to whom Arms were granted in 1795. Anyhow Robert's Arms appear to have been : Quarterly indented argent and sable. three falcons counterchanged. Crest: A Falcon sable within a wreath of laurel.
Motto: "Montem Quam Dedecus Malo"

3/4a it appears that Robert's heiress daughter marr. GEORGE Shum of Bury Hall, Dorking, Surry to whom arms had been granted in 1801. He, afterwards of Ham, Sy. and of Arcot Hall, NBL changed his name in 1823 to SHUM-STOREY and used the quartered arms of Shum & Storey, and two crests. A Canton sable was added to the STOREY arms, but dropped by his descendants; and a crown added on the falcon in the crest. Motto as above (Bookplate)

3/4b EMMELINE ANNE SHUM-STOREY, the heiress grand-daughter of George Shum married in 1872 Capt. Lawrence P. SHAWE, RM, later of Arcot Halt, NBL. He changed his name in 1873 to SHAWE-STOREY and quartered the Storey undifferenced arms with the Shawe arms. The joint Arms of this couple were then Quarterly, 1 &4 STOREY, 2&3 SHAWE, on an inescutcheon of pretence: Quarterly, 1&4 STOREY, 2&3 SHUM. Two Crests:1. On a falcon, within a laurel wreath, a Crown above a Cross-crosslet (STOREY), 2. the SHAWE crest. Motto - "Sola Virtus Rediit Nobilem" [one Shawe-Storey & two Shum-Storey Bookplates]
