Places Named Story or Storey

Story County Iowa: Organized in 1853, Story county Iowa was named after Joseph Story, associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Storey County Nevada: Organized in 1861, STOREY county Nevada was named after Captian (Edwin Faris) Storey, who was an Indian fighter during the Indian wars of the mid 1800’s. It was reported that Captain Storey was shot by an Indian and lived five days before he died. The place in western Nevada where he died was later named after him.

Story, Indiana: Located in Brown county in southern, Indiana, the small town of STORY was established in the 1850’s by Dr. George Story and his relatives. They were a clan of timber harvesters from southern Ohio who were attracted to the Story area by the vast expanses of virgin hardwoods.

Fort Story Virginia: Located on Cape Henry Virgina in the Norfolk / Virginia Beach area, FORT STORY became a military installation in 1914 when the Virginia General Assembly gave the land to the U.S. Government "to erect fortifications and for other military purposes." The War Department named this land in Cape Henry, "Fort Story" after General John Patton Story. Story was one of the most noted coast artillerymen of his day. Click here for more information.

Story, Arkansas: Story, Arkansas is located 23 miles northwest of Hot Springs in Montgomery County. On August 27, 1886, James Story received a permit to establish a post office at a small village which was named Story, Montgomery County, with Nellie Story appointed postmistress. It has remained Story since that time. There were sawmills, gins, and gristmills since the 1870s. General stores were owned by Jim Logan Blakely, Columbus (Lum) Story, and several others, including an Owen Story. In 1870, James and California Story came in covered wagons from West Plains, Missouri. They immediately moved to Montgomery County, Arkansas where Story is now located. They acquired some land, 160 acres, under the Homestead Act. James served in the Confederate Army. They had five children: Isabelle, Dora, William Henry, Sidney Columbus (Lum) and Eddie. After California died in 1883, James married Nellie Myers Neese in 1884.

Storey's Arms, Wales: The tiny hamlet of "Storey's Arms" is an old, if not ancient, hamlet set high in the Black Mountain National Park in Wales, in the beautiful Brecon Beacons range. The spelling and local memories speak of an inn-keeper of long ago, who chose an extremely thirsty section of a high pass to set up his tavern. Perhaps he ran true to Storey form and was remembered for his character ?. Incidentally, the area is so isolated and remote that the British Army train their elite forces there- for example the SAS.
Special thanks to Geoff Storey for providing this information.

Story Creek, located in Sevier County Arkansas near DeQueen: Story Creek was named after William (Bill) Story who was a noted bear hunter, and the great-great grandfather of Doris Story Pendleton.

Storey Crossing, Florida: Located in Osceola County, Florida.

Story Landing, Florida: Located in Waltonn County, Florida.

Storrie, California: Located in Plumas County, California.

Story's Crossroads, North Carolina: Located in Gates County, North Carolina.
