Zachariah [Zachary] Story, son of Rowland Story (c1650-1709) & Anne Belcher,
was born 27 June 1706 Boston, Suffolk Co MA. He married 10 Mar 1729 St
Andrews Parish, Berkeley Co SC to Mary Ellis "of James Island." After the
death of Zachariah, she m2. 2 (or 8) Oct 1733 in St Andrews Parish to Thomas
Sissons. Zachariah died testate, and his will, written 14 Feb 1732, probated
30 Apr 1732, names wife Mary, son Zachariah (gets land "on James Island,
formerly my grandfathers, 44 A. on Perotown Creek"), daughter Elizabeth gets
land in Granville County, 372 A. One of the witnesses to this will was
Zachariah's brother, Jeremiah Story.
Children of Zachariah Story Sr:
1. Elizabeth, b. 31 Mar 1730 James Island SC, according to family tradition
mc1750 in Dutchess Co NY to Ephraim Mosher (1726-1823) who m2. 23 Oct 1783 in
Dartmouth MA to Joanna (Mott) Mosher, widow of Joseph Mosher. Ephraim Mosher
is said to have moved from Dartmouth MA to Dutchess Co NY when he was about
19 years old (c1745).
Note by em: I have always been curious about what Elizabeth was doing in
Dutchess Co NY in 1750 when she married Ephraim Mosher. Her brother
Zachariah didn't move there until about 1788, at which time, if information
on this family is correct, Elizabeth had been deceased for several years.
2. Zachariah (1732-1811) m. Mary = continued
Benjamin Story, son of Rowland Story (c1650-1709) & Anne Belcher, was born 15
Nov 1707 Boston, Suffolk Co MA. He died in SC in 1734, and the South
Carolina Gazette, issue of 2 Mar 1734 printed the following obituary: "On the
23rd last past in the morning one Martin Dunn... happened to be with Benjamin
Story in his Perianger in the Northern Branch of the Stony River and striking
at an alligator fell overboard and down to the ground immediately; no doubt
but the alligator made a good breakfast of him."
John Story, son of Rowland Story (1683-1732) & Elizabeth Ellicott, was born
in SC between 1710-1732, and died there about 1767. He married 23 Nov 1753
St Helenas Parish, Beaufort Co SC to Elizabeth Mikell who was born 2 Feb
1738. His children, as named in the will of his mother [Elizabeth Ellicott
Story Darvel] were:
1. William, b. 10 Jan 1755, bapt 13 Mar 1755
2. Ellicott, b. 6 Oct 1757, bapt 22 Jan 1758
3. John, bapt 26 Dec 1759
4. Elizabeth
Zachariah Story Jr, son of Zachariah Story (1706-1732) & Mary Ellis, was born
1732 Berkeley Co SC, died testate on 30 Apr 1811 Stanford, Dutchess Co NY;
m. Mary [maiden name unknown] who was born 1736 and died 27 July 1812
Bangall, Dutchess Co NY. Dutchess Co NY Deed 20-519, dated 20 Dec 1780:
Forfeiture of property of Zachariah Story, 409 A. He is listed in the county
on 1790, 1800 & 1810 censuses. His children were:
1. Zachariah (1756-1837) m1786 Elizabeth Cory
2. Rowland (c1757-1849) m. Hannah Ostram
3. Mary, b. 21 Feb 1762, d. 20 Apr 1843 (or 1841)
m. 12 Jan 1782 to J. Comer Bullock
4. Benjamin (1764-1841) m1782 Elizabeth Park
5. Amos (1767-1826) m1785 Ede Wolbridge, m2. Catherine Prough
6. Elizabeth, born 1769, d. Aug 1844, m. 17 Oct 1784 Elijah Shaw
7. Sarah (1774-1805) m. Melancton Cornwell
Researchers have stated the following: The family were Tories. Zachariah
owned land about 20 miles in extent along the James River in SC. During the
Rev. War the property was confiscated and they escaped to Nova Scotia about
1783, and after the Rev. War (1788) they moved to Dutchess Co NY and settled
in the town of Nine Partners where Elizabeth and her husband Ephraim Mosher
were.
In the Council Journal of 1751, Granville Co SC: Petition of Elicot Story,
the heir at law of Zachary Story, his uncle, for whom "one of the hunting
islands containing 372 A. was surveyed on 7 July 1732" was approved and
granted.
Note by em: A question I have is the reason Ellicott Story would have
petitioned for land in 1751 as the heir at law of Zachariah Story Sr. if
Zachariah Story Jr. was still living in the area. Another question concerns
Zachariah's sister Elizabeth, who is said to have married in Dutchess Co NY
about 1750. What was she doing in NY if her only brother was still living in
SC? Also, if the information given about her is correct, she had been
deceased for several years by 1788, when her brother is said to have moved to
NY. Anyone have any comments about all this?
