Richard Story
The Men from Warren Co. Georgia
Concerning research on various men named Richard Story who lived in Georgia,
and requests I have had, I submit the following information for further
research. Any and all discussions on these early settlers would be
appreciated.
Richard Story #1
Of St Pauls Parish & Richmond Co GA, witnessed a deed in that place in 1773.
He is said to have been bc1730, deceased by 2 Oct 1784, when court records of
Richmond Co GA show that Rachel Wells was appointed administrator of his
estate, with David Perryman as security. By 1787, Rachel Wells was again
mentioned in court records, as the widow of Samuel Wells. Rachel lived in
that area of Richmond which became Columbia Co. and Warren Co GA.
It has also been suggested - but also never proven - that Rachel Wells was
the widow of Richard Story and that she then married Samuel Wells. Whatever,
she was no doubt a relative of a close degree to have become administrator of
the estate of the Richard Story who died in 1784.
In view of the information in the next paragraph (designated Richard Story
#2) I believe serious consideration should be given to whether the Richard
who died in 1784 was actually the "old" Richard.
Richard Story #2
In the folder for the 1803 passport of Richard Story [see following] are
three depositions relating to a claim by one Richard Story, of Warren Co GA,
who deposed in 1821 that he had a "just claim against the Creek Indians" and
states on oath that he was a citizen of Georgia before the Revolutionary War
as early as the year 1770. He also states that in 1779 they stole two mares
and also took two of his sons [first names not given]. The deposition of his
daughter, Mary [Story] Hamilton, was given at the same time and place as was
another child, Jesse Story - who was not one of the two sons taken by the
Creek Indians. Richard Story appointed Elisha Perryman of Warren Co GA to
journey to the Georgia Capitol to collect his money on September 17, 1822.
Now, the only Jesse Story who fits this record is Jesse Story who was b1767
NC. It would appear that his father Richard (born by at least 1745, and
possibly earlier) is still living in 1822.
Obviously, the Story and Perryman families are close friends and neighbors,
and perhaps have other ties. History of Little Briar Creek Baptist Church
says: Rev. Elisha J. Perryman, b. 6 Feb 1759 Halifax Co VA, moved to Columbia
Co GA with his family after 1776, he m1787 Ruth Cobb, m1826 Martha Watson.
Researchers of the Story family in early GA records will also recognize the
tie with the name Cobb.
Richard Story #3
He (or an earlier Richard?) had a land survey 1787 in Richmond Co GA, and an
additional land grant in 1789. He is on the 1794 tax list in Warren Co GA,
1795 deed shows he had wife named Elizabeth. He appears to be the Richard of
1810 and 1818 tax lists in Pulaski Co GA. The 1820 Land Lottery appears to
list two men named Richard Story [father and son?] with the younger being
listed on the 1820 census. His heirs are listed in GGM v50 p370 [Bill of
Sale, recorded 15 Dec 1823].
Richard Story #4
He was the brother of Edward Story Sr (bc1764) and James Story (bc1780). He
lived in Warren Co GA, in 1803 applied for passport to Natches Country
[Louisiana, along Mississippi River]. He was still in GA during the 1805
Land Lottery, when he had one draw (because he was unmarried) and won a
prize. In 1807 he transferred his membership from Little Briar Creek Church
to Ebenezer Baptist Church of Amite Co MS. He was dismissed from this church
in 1813, and was present at constitution of the Baptist Church of Christ at
Hephzibah in Feliciana Parish LA.
Richard Story #5
He is the son of Richard #3, is one of the heirs listed on the 1823 bill of
sale, is listed 1820 Laurens Co GA, 1830 Irwin Co GA, 1840 Lee Co GA. I have
nothing which lists the name of his wife or his several children.
