Elisha Story of Boston
Page One

Elisha Story was born 1683 in Cumberland, England, and died 20 Sept 1725 Boston, Suffolk Co MA. The books "Elisha Story of Boston and Some of His Descendants" and "Storeys of Old" say that he arrived in Boston from England with his sister Sarah about 1700; they were members of the Old South Church in 1704; he was a Cordwainer (shoemaker) and lived in Cambridge Street. It is said his house occupied the site of Paul Revere's House. His sister Sarah married Thomas Dawes, and their son Thomas Dawes Jr. was the partner of Paul Revere on his famous Midnight Ride.

Elisha Story, of Boston, and Samuel Story Jr. [of Norwich, New London Co CO], with 98 others, had the Grant of Nottingham NH.

Because of several pieces of circumstantial evidence, it has been suggested that Elisha Story was in fact the son of William Story (1650-1721) and Susannah Fuller.

Elisha was married twice. He married first on 17 Oct 1706 in Boston to Lydia Emmons who died in July 1713. He married secondly, 1 Oct 1713, Mrs Sarah (Cooper) Renouf. She was the sister of Rev. William Cooper of Brattle St. Church.

Elisha had several children who died as infants, and the only two known to survive to maturity were his daughter Lydia (1718-1788) who married John Box, and his son William (1720-1799), continued.

William Story, Esq., born 25 Apr 1720 in Boston, died 24 Nov 1799 at Marblehead, Essex Co MA. He married first, 1741, to Elizabeth Marion (1721-1746) who was the mother of three children. His second wife, whom he married in 1747, was said to be Mrs Joanna Appleton, daughter of Maj. Isaac Appleton (1664-1747) & Priscilla Baker. His third wife, m. 29 Feb 1776 Newton, Middlesex Co MA, was the widow Mrs Abigail Marshall who died in 1798.

His children were:
1. Ellen (Eleanor) (1742-1767) m1763 Capt. Thomas Dodge.
2. Elisha (1743-1805) = continued.
3. Elizabeth Anne (1745-1775) m1766 Col. John Heard.
4. William (1748-1806) = continued.
5. Isaac (1749-1816) = continued.
6. Joanna, born 1751, died young.
7. Joseph (1753-c1828) m1794 Catherine (Seek?). He moved to New Madrid
County Missouri where he was a surveyor. He died without issue.
8. John (1754-1791) died unmarried in Pennsylvania; a lawyer.
9. Daniel (1756-1804) a clergyman, died unmarried in Marietta, Ohio.
10. Ebenezer, born 1757, died young.
11. Sarah (Sally) (1759-1823) m1787 Ebenezer Clough

Dr. Elisha Story (1743-1805) was the son of William Story (1720-1799) and Elizabeth Marion. He was born in Boston, and died in 1805 in Marblehead. His first wife, m1767, was Ruth Ruddock (1746-1778) and his second wife, m1778 was Mehetabel Stacey Pedrick (1758-1847) daughter of Maj. John Pedrick & Mehitable Stacy. In a correspondence with his son William, Judge Story (her son) speaks of her as a young woman 19 years of age when married, and assumed the care of 7 children of a previous mother. The children of Dr. Elisha Story were:

1. John Ruddock (1769-1846) m1795 Judith Mahew
2. Tabitha/Tibitha (1771-1852) m1792 Nathaniel King Devereux.
3. Abiel Ruddock (twin) (1772-1829) m1799 Huldah Clough
