Biography of Daniel Story
Page One

It is possible, in fact probable, that Daniel descends from [was a grandson of] the Daniel Story who was born about 1695 (my estimate), and died about 1752 in Southampton Co VA. The appraisal of his estate was ordered on 11 Jan 1753. His wife was named Mary, and she signed the estate account on 11 Dec 1755. Because of locality, it seems reasonable to assume that James Story (c1725-1784) was the son of Daniel & Mary.

James Story, born about 1725 (my estimate), died 1784 Southampton Co VA. He left a will, dated 26 Sept 1781, probated 9 Dec 1784, which names as legatees his children, and made provision for his wife [said to be named Ann]. His son Daniel was executor of the estate, and the appraisal was recorded 10 Mar 1785 and signed by Daniel Story. The children of James Story were:
1. Samuel (c1756-1820) m. Mary Hancock
2. Salah = ?? Amey Story m. 30 Aug 1781 James Hughes
3. Daniel (1760-1840) m1781 Elizabeth Speed = continued
4. John (c1761-c1835) m1785 Janet Britt
5. Lewis (c1763-1839) m1786 Mildred -----
6. James (c1765-1844) m1788 Esther Wilson
7. Nanny, m. 13 Aug 1798 Jordan Johnson
8. Sally
9. Elizabeth

Daniel Story, born 1760 Southampton Co VA, was a Revolutionary Soldier, married there in 1781 to Elizabeth Speed, and remained in that place until after 1790 [tax list], when he started his move west. None of his brothers went with him, and all their families can be established by Southampton Co VA records.

Although the 1790 VA census no longer exists, and we don't know how many children Daniel & Elizabeth had at the time, it is reasonable to use the commonly accepted practice of assigning them a child born every two years. Combined with census records from 1800 & 1810 Anson Co NC, the following has been established as the family of Daniel & Elizabeth Story:
1. child 1782, gone 1800 =
probable: Samuel (c1782-p1850) m. Senth -----
2. son c1783, gone 1810 =
probable: Henry (bc1783) m. Mary/Polly -----
3. Nancy, b. 1785 VA, d. 1859/60 Newton Co AR;
m. 3 Apr 1800 James Salmon who d1826
4. son c1786
5. dau c1788 = Mary m. Roland Williams
6. son c1790 = James (c1789-1873) m. Euradice -----
7. dau c1792
8. son c1794 = Daniel (1795-1884) mc1819 Susan T. (McCaig?)
9. dau c1796
10. son c1800
11. son c1803 = Elijah (1804-1878) mc1828 Lydia -----
12. son c1806 = prob. the male b. 1800/10 with Elijah 1830
13. dau c1809 = prob. the female b. 1810/15 with Elijah 1830

By 1816, Daniel is in Dickson Co TN, where he witnessed a deed of land sale from James Salmon to Henry Story. James Salmon was Daniel's son-in-law, and Henry was a son.

Daniel applied for a pension application on August 16, 1832, when he stated he was 72 years old, and on May 8, 1833, he stated he was age 73.

Daniel appears to be enumerated in Elijah's household in 1830, as the male who was born 1760/70, along with Elizabeth and their two youngest children. Daniel was also there in 1840, but it appears that Elizabeth died between 1830-1840. Daniel is said to have died in 1840, probably in Henderson Co TN, and buried there.

Of those children (and probable children) of Daniel and Elizabeth, the following discussions establish a good assumption for the connection, based on circumstantial evidence, along with available records.

I believe that Daniel & Elizabeth's first child was a son named Samuel. This is the Samuel that many researchers believe was born 1768 in Alabama (as stated on 1850 census of Cass Co TX).
