26-45 (b. 1765/84)
45 & up (b. by 1765)
1820 Census
This is the tricky one; males can be counted twice, depending on their age!
Any male between 16-18 will be listed again in the 16-26 year bracket. Keep
this in mind! Categories are:
Males: Born: Females:
0-10 1810/20 0-10

16-18 1802-1804 (no category)

26-45 1775/94 26-45

1830 Census

0-5 (b. 1825/30)
5-10 (b. 1820/25)
10-15 (b. 1815/20)
15-20 (b. 1810/15)
20-30 (b. 1800/10)
30-40 (b. 1790-1800)
40-50 (b. 1780/90)

70-80 (b. 1750/60)
80-90 (b. 1740/50)
90-100 (b. 1730/40)
100 + (b. by 1730)
1840 Census
Categories for males & females are the same as the 1830 census, but remember
to adjust the year they were born. For instance, age 0-5 were born 1835/40),
age 100+ were born by 1740. This census has an added column for
Revolutionary War pensioners and their ages.
1850 Census
This is the first census which lists each member of the household by name,
age, and birthplace, sex and color.
1880 Soundex Census
This census lists ONLY families with children under the age of 10 years in
the house, and gives the relationship of the children to the head of
household. If you suspect that your ancestors are living, but have no small
children in the house, it is necessary to search the regular (Federal) census
which contains all households.
1880 (Federal) Census
This census shows the relationship of each person listed to the head of
household, and the place of birth of the father & mother of each individual.
1890 Census
Most have been destroyed - but not all! Check the every name index prepared
by the National Archives.
