Nelson Story Born 1838 in Burlington, Ohio, Nelson Story was the youngest son of Ira and Hannah Story, who had migragted from New Hampshire to Ohio in a covered wagon several years earlier. By the age of 29, Nelson Story had moved to Texas where he worked as a cowboy, herding longhorn cattle on the Bozeman Trail to Montana. When he arrived in Montana, Nelson Story purchased land and started a cattle ranch in the Gallatin Valley. He bacame the largest breeder of cattle and horses in Montana, and later expanded his business interests into milling and banking. Near the turn of the century, Neslon Story began spending his winters in Los Angeles, California, where he invested in downtown real estate. He built the city’s first skyscraper, The Walter P. Story Building, named for his son. Nelson Story died in 1926 at the age of 88.
