| Helen Guthrie Williams of Pomeroy, great-granddaughter of Byron Story, a brother to
Nelson, shared a letter she received in 1993 from her cousin, Pete Story, who lives on the
Story Ranch in Montana.
In the letter Pete Story talks about a trip which he and his father Malcolm, the grandson
of Nelson Story, made back to the old Place in Ohio in 1980.
Ruth Ellen (Ruth Ellen Story of Athens) very graciously took us around and
introduced us to some of the relatives in the area. I think what impressed me most about
our Eastern cousins is that you all seem to be warm hearted, gentle and peaceful - - not
rowdy like your Western kin, he wrote.
That was Malcolms last visit to Ohio. He died at 92 on Sept. 16, 1994.
The Story Ranch will go to Pete Storys son, another Nelson Story, and he is charged
with continuing the family traditions, according to the letter.
Last fall about 60 cousins of the Story family gathered at the Bungtown Modern
Woodmen hall in Burlingham to celebrate Nelson Story Day.
It was a time for reflecting on the illustrious past of a native son, to reminisce about
their ancestors, and to share stories which had been handed down from generation to
generation.
Published accounts of Nelson Storys accomplishments were displayed in which more
than once he was described as a man of great daring and great wealth. The story of
Lonesome Dove reportedly was based on Nelson Storys cattle drive from Texas to
Montana in 1866.
In 1959 he was a posthumous inductee into the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in
Oklahoma City, Okla.
