Storeys of Great Britain

The STOREY name was found in early medieval England along the border with Scotland. From the 10th century forward, Storeys were found in the English counties of Cumberland, Northumberland, Tyndale, Westmoreland and Durham.

Note: In the above map, early Medieval political entities, in coloured ink, overlay later Medieval National and Shire boundaries. English Northumbria was divided into two: Bernicia, stretching from Edinburgh to include modern Northumberland and Durham; and Deira, roughly modern Yorkshire and much of Lincolnshire.
British Strathclyde stretched from Dunbarton to Lancaster. It was taken over by the Scots only in the Eleventh Century, prompting the English to seize the area south of Carlisle.
