Storey Families in Ireland
Page Two

Storys / Storeys settled in Counties Antrim, Cavan, Tyrone, Monaghan, Dublin, Kildare & Limerick in numbers. They also settled less numerous, in Counties Londonderry, Donegal, Fermanagh, Cork, Wicklow, Leitrim, Meath & Wexford. Small groups settled also in Tipperary, Armagh, Down, Galway, Kerry, Mayo, Louth, Longford, Carlow, Offaly, Roscommon, Laoighis & Waterford. These Storys / Storeys were mostly farmers and non-conformists (dissenters) - Presbyterians & Methodists.

Story / Storey emigrants to America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand & South Africa generally came from these farmer classes. Monaghan Storys / Storeys were mostly concentrated at Clones where there were 40 Adult Storys / Storeys living in the mid 1800s. Clones is situated at the junction of four Counties - Monaghan, Cavan, Tyrone & Fermanagh, so it is not surprising that the next biggest concentration of Storys / Storeys was in County Cavan. Cavan was also the seat of the Bingfield Storys - Churchmen, Military Officers and Land-owners, relatives of the Storys of Corick, Clogher, Co. Tyrone.

The Cavan Storys / Storeys settled mostly at Arva, Belturbet, Ballyconnell, Bawnboy, Killeshandra & Swanlinbar.

Monaghan had two main Storey settlements - Clones & Tydavnet.

Tyrone Storys owned huge estates and because of Clogher's importance (Church-wise) their influence was very noticeable. Another branch of this family lived at Errington, near Kilskeery, where James Hamilton Story was High Sheriff of Leitrim & Tyrone.

The Corick Storys (Rev. John Benjamin Story) owned a strip of land stretching from Clogher right over to Tydavnet, Co. Monaghan, amounting to some 2,000 acres and occupied by 24 tenant families - Ballywholan Townland. They inter-married with the powerful Lendrum family of Moorfield (approx 1735) and also with Heiress Anne Theaker (approx 1750) from County Wicklow.
