Thomas "Quaker" Story

The painting of "Penn's Treaty with the Indians" includes Thomas "Quaker" Story and is displayed at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia. Thomas Story is one of the figures to the left of Penn, who is central in the picture. Thomas "Quaker" was a successful Lawyer and Penn directed many important Clients to him from 1695 onwards. As a "Quaker" preacher he was frequently arrested for his "fire & brimstone" sermons - once detained in Kilkenny in Ireland while visiting his brother Dean George.

Thomas Story was born c 1665 in Carlisle, England. He was the son of Thomas and Thomassine Story. He became a member of the Society of Friends in 1689, and followed William Penn to Pennsylvania Colony in 1693. In 1701, Thomas Story held the office of "Master of the Rolls" for the city of Philadelphia. He was offered the office of Mayor of Philadelphia in 1707, but declined to accept. Thomas Story died June 24, 1742 and is buried in Carlisle, England.
