Kilmore Cathedral
County Cavan

The Cathedral is situated on a wooded elevation not far from Lough Oughter, where Bishop Bedell was imprisoned in 1641. Known     affectionately as "The Cathedral in the Country" it is the only cathedral situated away from a town or city. Built first in 1152 then replaced in 1454, and again re-built in 1860, the present Cathedral is built in Middle Pointed Gothic style.

The doorway (photo above) is 12th century and believed to originate at the Abbey of Lough Oughter (see photo of Lough Oughter).

Dedicated to scholarly Bishop William Bedell who was at Kilmore (1629-1642). This wonderful Cathedral Church contains a translation of the Old Testament (Bible) into the Irish language. It was this work which Bishop William Bedell undertook in the 1630s and it is believed that his life was spared by the Rebels of 1641 for this reason.
